“It is better to fail in originality than to succeed in imitation”
Over the last few weeks I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about my plans for this site.
What I can do to provide you, the user with the best possible information and advice to help you recover from anxiety and to stop panic attacks.
To do this I decided to write down the many ideas which have been forming in my mind and the direction in which this site will be heading.
The ‘Calm and Courageous Manifesto’ if you like.
But rather than keep it to myself, saved away in some word document, I thought why not share it with you, the people it is all about.
I want you to know exactly what to expect and what you can look forward to as a reader.
Let’s first start with the aim, what this website has been set up to do.
It’s as follows:
To be the website where people can go to get the help, information and guidance they need to recover, so that they can say:
For me, it all started at CalmandCourageous.com
It’s a bold aim I know.
But that’s because that is how much my mindset has changed.
I’m no longer the guy who lives with constant worry and whose life is ruled by his anxious feelings.
My confidence and self belief are returning and returning fast. I no longer live with that overwhelming sense of doom.
Now I’m ready to take on the world, to do something which makes the difference, for myself and for others too.
I’m here to give my all and I’m ready to risk more than I ever thought I could.
Most importantly, I’m no longer scared, and I tell you what, it’s the most incredible feeling I’ve known.
The power of the written word
Words are a powerful thing.
When spoken or written in just the right way they can change your whole way of thinking.
I plan to use mine very carefully, to be able to get across exactly what I have done to get to where I am today and to show you where I am heading.
To write in such a way that my knowledge is not only easily accessible, but useable too.
But of course, it is not just my words which count, it is your words as well.
That is why your comments, feedback and interactions are so important in making this site a great community for all.
We’ve only been up and running a few months but already the positive feedback has been amazing.
See exhibit A:
After I had read what Chris wrote it got me even more fired up.
It helps drive me on and everyday my determination to succeed only grows.
It’s the power of the written word.
But we’re only at the beginning and there’s a long way to go.
Other anxiety sites
There are a lot of websites already out there on the topic of anxiety and panic attacks.
I should know, I’ve read through hundreds of them.
Lots of people blogging away about how anxiety is affecting their lives, the problems they are facing and providing in depth details about their latest panic attack.
I can see why they write about this.
They do it to help themselves get it all out. To try and make some sense of the way they are feeling and what they are going through.
Your being able to relate to this is all well and good, but the truth is, there’s only so much this can do to help.
I’ve often found reading endless pages of other people’s problems only ended up drawing me further down into my own.
Then there are the sites set up overnight trying to sell you the latest anxiety and panic cure which promises you ‘results in just 24 hours’.
They spend more time on their marketing and advertising than on the quality of their product.
See image below of their pathetic attempts on twitter to try and get you to their site. The poor English alone should be enough of a warning for you to stay away.
Many don’t even seem to care if you recover or not. They’re in it for a quick buck and you’re just another ‘customer’, willing to try anything to make the anxiety and panic go away.
It’s sickening really.
Thankfully the majority of people aren’t that stupid, they know when someone is just after their card details.
Finally there are the private therapy, medical and pharmaceutical sites.
The majority of the content here is poorly written, quickly thrown together articles by someone employed to create X amount of content per month to meet their quota and to help try and sell their products and services.
Many of these writers have no real idea what they are talking about, they don’t know what it’s like to live with anxiety and panic.
They are just told to write over 500 words on a specific topic, to insert some nice photos and add a catchy headline to draw you in.
They all copy content off each other and so it ends up just being a mishmash of the same old regurgitated crap.
The problem is, people see so many of these ‘anxiety relief’ guides all saying pretty much the same thing that they believe what they are reading is true.
Now don’t get me wrong. There are some good sites out there, but they are few and far between and often no longer being updated.
This is why I created Calm and Courageous.
Why is Calm and Courageous different?
I’m going to be writing about what really makes a difference and not only that, I’m going to show you how it’s done.
And how do I know I can do this?
Because I’ve walked the walk before I’ve talked the talk and I plan to continue doing so.
I lived through anxiety for almost 10 years, I’ve found what works to feel better and I’m never going back to how I used to be.
I’m here to share with you how you can do the same.
Calm and Courageous isn’t just a blog, it’s not a product, it’s my life.
I want it to be the best.
The only way that will ever happen is if those who read it and implement what it teaches want to tell others what they have found because they see that it works.
There will be no fancy marketing schemes here, just great content I believe people will want to tell others about.
So why am I telling you all this?
It’s not to brag, it’s not to pretend I’m something I’m not.
I’m still a normal guy facing the usual problems of the world and I’ll be making plenty of mistakes along the way.
I’m telling you because I know what it feels like when the anxiety and panic is all consuming and there seems like no way out.
For many it is so bad it limits their life and what they can achieve, but it doesn’t have to be this way.
I want to help, it’s as pure and simple as that.
I’m accountable to you, my readers and it’s important that I get it right.
What you comment and tell me about will help shape what the blog becomes.
This isn’t going to be some fly-by-night website, I’m in it for the long run.
It’s also not going to be a load of marketing fluff to try and sell you a product full of hot air.
Calm and Courageous is the real deal. Here to help you make the changes you want and to be with you every step of the way.
The formula is simple.
I lived life with anxiety, I learnt how to recover, I continue to make progress by living life to the full again and I write about it.
More importantly, I will show you how you can do it too.
Will I ever feel anxious or panicked again?
Yes of course.
Everyone experiences those feelings from time to time.
What matters is being able to return to the person you used to be and to be able to do what you want to do. Whatever that may be.
To stop all the incessant worry, the daily physical symptoms and the anguish they bring so that your anxiety and panic become a thing of the past, not your future.
I’ve made a decision, when I feel fear I will keep going and I’ll keep doing it until it is no longer there.
I have things I still need to face, but slowly and surely I will.
Not only that but I’m excited about doing it too, I now welcome the challenge.
I hope to inspire you to do the same.
What you will get from this site
My advice will help provide you with the tools techniques and methods combined with the drive and determination required for you to succeed.
It will also remind you there are no set rules, everyone is different and you have to find your own unique way to your recovery.
I’ve learnt more about myself in the last few years than I have in all my other years combined.
If anyone had asked me before what my biggest weakness was, the answer would have been my anxiety every time.
My weakness was the daily worry and panic I endured and the effect it had on my mental health.
So I’ve decided to flip my anxiety on its head, to use it as my biggest strength.
To use it to drive me forwards and to get to where I want to be in life.
It’s this new way of thinking that I want to share with you.
So how will I do this?
This site will help your recovery from anxiety and panic attacks by doing the following:
- Help you get your mindset right – to believe in your recovery and that you have what it takes
- Help you to stop your old anxious thought habits by retraining your thinking away from those thoughts which cause the anxiety and panic
- Explain the life style changes which will help aid and increase the speed of your recovery
- Show you how to stop caring and focusing on your anxiety so that you can let it go, in order to allow your recovery to happen
- Show you how to face your fears and give you the motivation to keep doing it
- Help you understand the time and patience required and how to deal with the set backs along the way
- To give you the motivation to want more and to do things you’d never thought you could do
I also understand that this advice has to be useable, you must be able to put it into action and see how it works.
Therefore I plan to provide:
- Detailed information on why you feel the way you do and how you can change your thinking
- Step by step actionable help and advice that you can actually use
- Detailed guides on a large range of issues associated with panic and anxiety
- In field reports to show you how to face panic attacks and how to become calm in those situations
- Reports and reviews on services and and products out there which actually help
- To build a community for those who want to get involved and which spurs others on
- Much much more besides
A lot of this has already begun in many of my previous articles, but it’s going to take time to build this site into what I believe it can be.
My promise to you is that I’m going to make it the best it can be.
Every actionable piece of advice I talk about will have been tried and tested by me first.
Every product, book or service I recommend will only be something I’ve used and felt made a positive difference to the way I felt.
Only if they get my seal of approval will I share them with you, because my word is my reputation and that is something I will never risk.
But you have no medical qualifications?
You’re right, I don’t.
I’m sure there are some amazing medical professionals out there who really know their stuff and can help.
The problem is, they are few and far between.
Out of all the doctors and psychologists I’ve spoken to, I’ve yet to meet one of them yet.
The issue is, you can teach someone to perform a heart transplant, but how can you teach someone to understand what you go through with anxiety and panic if you have never been through it yourself?
My angle is therefore completely different.
I’ve lived through it, experienced it, felt it and bled it until it felt like my brain would explode.
That’s not something you’re ever going to get from someone in a white coat sat behind a desk in a well air conditioned room.
I want to help more than anything else, because I know how it feels to be where you are.
I also know how great it feels to be free and I want that for each and everyone of you.
Understanding the medical science is all well and good, but what you really need to know is how you can put it into action.
What it is you must do to get the results you wish to see.
In the end this is what it all comes down to, and my goal is to be the person who can help you make that happen.
